UpWord

About the Game:

"UpWord" is a 2D word-building platformer in which the player ascends infinitely, bouncing on letter tiles to gain height and spell words. Score as many points as you can within the time limit, submitting words to gain more time.

Role: UI and Game Artist, Game Designer

My role in the game was to work together with the team to design a mobile game, focusing on how we could combine the goals and mechanics of multiple games to create a unique mobile experience. As artist, I planned and created the art and UI assets for the game. The inspiration for our visual design was a chalk board as we wanted to use a naturally coherent theme to match our game.

Wireframes

My initial task as UI and game artist was to create the wireframes to set a foundation for the initial prototypes and development of our game.

This included our (from left to right, top to bottom) home, settings menu, gameplay screens, pause menu, and end screen.

Concepts

For our art, I created several mockups of how our game could look. I mostly aimed to create themes that would reflect the spelling nature of our game as illustrated in the "3-hole-punch" paper design and the inevitably chosen blackboard design. I also created a few concepts that went outside of the traditional themes with one concept based on the the idea that it would transition from ground -> sky -> space. However along with not fitting the theme, it also pushed us out of scope due to the transition and requirement of multiple backgrounds, tiles, and platforms.
